Art History in an MS-DOS game: Centurion: Defender of Rome

Click to play the game

After hearing about the MS-DOS section put together by the Internet Archive, I decided to check it out myself.  While looking around (played Tank Wars!), I found this little game and played with it until I found myself stuck.

Turns out I’m not really good at starting an empire.

Or participating in races.

However, one screen led me to snip a picture and lo, a blog entry.

From Centurion

I spy with my little eye (from left to right):

The Discus Thrower by Myron

Heracles by Lysippos

Capitoline Venus

Possibly Zeus.  I have no idea about this one.

Apollo Belvedere

I’m not sure about this one either.  I couldn’t find anything online and the closest match came from a book I’m in the middle of reading, but that could only qualify as “close, but no cigar”.

All in all, nice of the designers to reference the Roman Empires’ interest in Greek art.
