Art History at the Movies: A Harlot’s Progress

A movie based on William Hogarth’s most famous print series titled A Harlot’s Progress.  The movie itself presents more fiction than fact.  I find it interesting that the director and the screenwriter chose to make a story when Hogarth’s print series based on a real woman.  In fact, a lot of characters in his story were real life people.  The “harlot” named Moll or Molly Hackabout was fictional, but the people came across were real.  To analyse a Hogarth painting would show the London he saw, and this London had a nasty rotten core.

On the soundtrack, I loved it, but it felt a little out-of-place.  Too contemporary for sixteenth century London.  I watched this in an art history class about Hogarth, and a friend reacted with shock when the movie had Hogarth start an affair with the title character.

However, I loved this film.  The set design, the acting, and direction delivered something top-notch.

Art Reenactments: Boy howdy!  Every scene with the title character makes reference to scenes from the series in gorgeous color.
