Art History in “One Who Saw” by A.M. Burrage

I read this story in my Hoopla app. The plot consists of two people remembering a biographer named Crutchley. According to the narrator, he was traveling to Rouen to gather research for a book.

Before the spirit makes its appearance, the story contemplates Rouen’s series of monuments portraying notable figures such as Joan of Arc and Napoleon.  According to my research, there are different statues of Joan in Rouen, but this is probably the sculpture the book references.
