Lord Dunsany seems to have incredible disdain for the monument. He also writes scenes of an actual Sphinx animal in other parts of the book.
Reading Reading Fifty-One Tales, I received a massive Neil Gaiman/Terry Pratchett vibe from this. Maybe it comes from the fact that all three authors depict the fantastic and the mythological in such a whimsical and British way. On another note, from I what I have seen from googling “Lord Dunsany Sphinx,” the author has written about this animal/monument before. I will look into this later.
ETA: A little warning, Dunsany does not hold back when using racial slurs.
