I had two observations while listening to the radio adaptation on BBC iPlayer. First of all, it builds up to a climax in the same vein as Shirley Jackson’s The Lottery.
Lastly, the reveal (and destruction) of the object reminded me of the opening scene from Equilibrium.  I haven’t watched it in years, but I remember the anti-emotion police coming down hard on art.

Did anyone else make the connection?
