In this song, the play moves from Seurat’s era of Modern art to Henry (Seurat’s descendant) of the American Contemporary art era. Amazing how Sondheim managed to capture the politics of museums, artists constantly networking, and Contemporary art’s post-Modern experimentation with technology in Chromolume #7. And you know what? It still feels fresh today, because I witness this same scene all the time now. When I first read the script, I felt especially bowled over the discussion between people on how an artist can quickly gain and lose a reputation as a creator of pioneering work.
By the way, I love the electronic sound that comes in and out.
