Made by Arts Council England, this eleven minute film practically hits you with the influences and paintings of Francis Bacon.  Especially with their use of zooming camera shots and extremely up angles.  Having read books that discussed photography and the unguarded looks of horror on people’s faces that affected the oeuvre of Bacon’s work, the only thing that surprised came from the little known paintings of his.  I did not know that he did a rendering of a Sphinx.  However, for those who need a quick introductory lesson on the man’s work, I recommend taking twenty minutes off and checking this out.

Returning to the camerawork, I really do enjoy those up close shots.  You actually see Bacon’s brushwork.  They make his paintings alive and show how the people resemble these deformed clay characters.  Given how harsh the background music felt to my ears, I have to mention it.  While his creations silently scream with their mouths gaping open, Elizabeth Lutyen’s compositions takes place of whatever noises that could have come out of their mouth.
