More information on anti-Methodist prejudice in William Hogarth’s time.
Ever since I first viewed William Hogarth’s Enthusiasm Delineated, I always laugh at how he depicted Methodists during their services. As someone who grew up Methodist (left during my teenage years), this scene represents such a blatant and hilarious lie. The Methodist church I knew represents the very definition of sedate to the point of stagnant. In fact, that stagnant state comes from why I left the church. Nothing against the people who worked there, I just felt unfulfilled.
However, if I did see women giving birth to rabbits, I would have stayed.
