Spending some time watching his section of the Directors Label Series, which I recommend just for his commentaries alone. He engages the viewer with his incredible wealth of knowledge and behind the scenes trivia.
Probably one of the reasons why I consider Mark Romanek one of my favorite directors. He fills videos such as Closer, The Perfect Drug, Bedtime Stories, Scream, Can’t Stop, and Got ‘Til It’s Gone full of references to the visual arts of the past (ETA: Not the only one to notice). Not to mention he combines all these references that creates this natural, seamless world. As a teenager, Romanek’s grand little films always stimulated my brain and left me breathless. Just the level of care and detail in his work makes for astonishing results. Furthermore, I consider him as a subconscious reason why I pursued the world of art history.
