Art History Radio: Hildegard….and David Lynch?!

Apparently, director David Lynch produced Lux Vivens.  The Amazon website confirms this.  Having seen his short films and Eraserhead, I cannot not even imagine his take on Hildegard.  Furthermore, I cannot imagine why would he help put together an album of her work.  So, with the help of singer Jocelyn Montgomery, how do some of the songs sound?  Caveat: I have not bought the album, I am just going by some songs I found on YouTube.

Clarissima

I must say, Jocelyn Montgomery has a lovely and delicate voice.  When her voice echoes, it echoes to the very heavens.  Speaking of which, the background music makes me think of outer space.

To Lynch’s credit, he keeps the background synthesizers down to the barest minimum so Montgomery’s ethereal voice can shine.

Besides a synthesizer, the sounds of waterfalls (I think) accompany the singer in this track.  However, this does not intrude on Montgomery’s singing.  Furthermore, she sings with a haunted quality in her voice.  In other words, if spirits could sing, their voices would resemble hers.  On the other hand, if one needed peaceful background music while, I would recommend this song.

All in all, hearing these songs makes me want to purchase this album.  David Lynch and Jocelyn Montgomery stand with Sequentia in showing great respect to the abbess.
