Did you hear about Zahi Hawass? He resigned from his post in Egypt. Found out on my Twitter account (Thanks CultureGrrl!). Of course, I also followed the backlash against him that came out of Egypt’s revolution which revealed new scandals against him on said account. During that time I wondered, what will happen to Hawass? I remember when I met him in Savannah, Georgia before a lecture during my graduate years. He had such an incredible charisma that he had the entire audience eating out of the palm of his hand. Every photo he showed in his presentation, the audience oohed and aahed at. He clearly reveled in his status when he showed various of photos of him with other celebrities. Later on, I owned one of his books. Of course, when one does not live in Egypt, one takes on a different view. Before you comment, I did know about the criticisms of Hawass before Egypt’s revolution. I also heard about them firsthand from other curators and professors. In hindsight, all this felt like a buildup to his resignation.
On the other hand, who will take over the care of the glorious past of Egypt as it heads toward a new era? On Hawass, I predict a documentary about him that revolves around every aspect of his life, both good and bad.
ETA: An interview with Dr. Hawass on why he resigned. Horrible what has happened to the antiquities.
