The Flower Book by Edward Burne-Jones

Does this review fit in the Artists as Writers category?  Oh well, I am putting it there anyway.   The company Taschen published this in 1999 with an essay that provides historical background behind the book and Burne-Jones himself.  I love the cover’s dark gold color that gives this book an elegant and understated feel.  On the art, text boxes informs the reader of each artwork’s narrative.  The narratives themselves consist mostly of Arthurian, Classical, and Biblical lore.  The art style itself has a stylized and textured look to it.  It reminded me of working with chalk during my high school art class days.  Quite a departure from his paintings with their lack of texture (see YouTube video for examples).  However, I do not complain, because The Flower Book’s stylization adds emotion and drama.  All in all, a cute little book to have around.  Burne-Jones’s color scheme will relax and delight you.
