Making art in a video game culture

While writing my review of Exit Through the Gift Shop and seeing graffiti renderings of video game characters, I felt inspired to write an anecdote.  When I went to Savannah College of Art and Design in 2009, I saw some art similar to what Space Invader and others did.  Only it took place in a classroom and the whiteboard acted as the canvas.  Every time I showed up for art history class, I would see a drawing of a Super Mario Brothers character.  A simple drawing done in marker, but still iconic.  I regret not photographing these ephemeral renderings.  All in all, everyone considered it harmless.  Not as morally ambiguous as typical Street art, but somebody obviously took inspiration from this movement.  This person knew that a lot of art history classes took place in this room, so it felt safe for them to express themselves.
