Right now, I am working on my thesis about the relationship between André Breton and Salvador Dali. Yesterday, I talked to the CEO of the Bechtler museum and had him look at my outline. Plus, I also talked to my parents about André Breton. However, before I go any further with this, let me describe how people feel about Breton. Ever since I started studying Surrealism and André Breton comes up, stories of him acting like a jerk come up as well. Just legendary stories of him treating artists so badly. For those curious about these stories, Dada: An Anthology, and Revolution of the Mind has plenty. In fact, when I brought up Breton to my teachers, they always held an opinion of him. “Knucklehead,” said one teacher. “Misogynist,” said another. In fact, the only nice things I have heard about him comes from him founding the Surrealist movement.
Now, back to talking with my parents about Breton. My father then asked, “How could one butthole go as far as he could?” Hence the title of this entry. However, the CEO of the Bechtler reminded me that all the Surrealists had… unappealing aspects in their personalities. My father believes that Breton may have pretended the butthole aspect of his personality. So, during this paper, I am going to try to deconstruct this man’s personality and how people viewed him.
